The Maryfield Senior Girls’ Volleyball team won the 2009 SHSAA/Milk Sportsmanship Award for their performance at the 2009 1A senior girls’ volleyball provincial.   A committee of SHSAA representatives, the host committee and the game officials observed the players, coaches, team personnel and spectators throughout the championship.   Based on the committee’s recommendation, the Maryfield senior girls were named the most sportsmanlike team for best representing the ideals of sportsmanship at the provincial championship.   Lyle McKellar, assistant executive director of the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association, made the presentation to the team and their coach on Friday, January 15.   He spoke about the history of the award and about the importance of sportsmanship.   He highlighted the characteristics of the Maryfield team that earned them the award, emphasizing their strong play, their enthusiasm for the game and their positive response in both win and loss situations.   While the girls were excited to capture the silver medals at the provincials held in Colonsay in November, being named the most sportsmanlike team is a great honour, one that the team and their coach will cherish for years to come. The girls on the team and their coach, Mrs. Frazer, approach the game of volleyball, and in fact all sports, with a sense of fair play and sportsmanship.    They are strong role models for the athletes in Maryfield School and in other schools they visit.   They are, indeed, very deserving candidates of this prestigious award.   Way to go girls!
